PCI-SIG® Year in Review: 2023
We are happy to celebrate another successful year for PCI-SIG® and wanted to take a moment to reflect on the accomplishments our community has made this year in the advancement and implementation of PCI Express® (PCIe®) technology. With the expansion of in-person events, the formation of new work groups, the 20th anniversary of the PCIe specification, and more, we are happy to review some of our highlights from 2023.
- PCI-SIG DevCon returned to Taiwan and the USA. We had the honor of announcing this year’s Chairperson’s Award winners, Dean Gonzales and our own Scott Knowlton on the PCI-SIG blog.
- We announced the new and improved PCI-SIG Members Forum. The forum is moderated by PCI-SIG Technical Work Group Chairs and PCIe technology experts and provides a record of technical questions and answers, making this forum a key resource for PCI-SIG members to learn as well as provide their own technical expertise.
- The “PCI Express Market Verical Opportunity” report by ABI Research was made available to PCI-SIG Members. The report analyzed PCIe technology connections in market verticals including data center, edge, telcos, AI, automotive, mobile devices and wearables. Through their research, ABI determined that PCI Express technology market is expected to reach $10 billion by 2027.
- The PCIe 7.0 Specification, Version 0.3 was released. Version 0.3 of the specification indicates that the first review draft of the specification is complete and has received work group approval. This is an important milestone for PCI-SIG, demonstrating we are on plan for a full specification release in 2025.
- We introduced videos on how PCIe technology is used across industry verticals. Watch these videos on YouTube to learn more about how the PCIe specification supports a variety of industries including servers, automotive, AI/ML, and more.
- PCI-SIG contributed to several industry events like ISC 2023, Flash Memory Summit, Storage Developers Conference, SC23 and others. You can view a list of upcoming events for 2024 here.
- PCI-SIG announced the formation of the Optical Work Group, to address the strong interest from the industry to broaden the reach of the established, multi-generational and power-efficient PCIe technology standard by enabling optical connections between applications. PCI-SIG welcomes input from the industry and invites all PCI-SIG members to join the Optical Workgroup via the members workspace, share their expertise and help set specific workgroup goals and requirements.
- We introduced the PCI-SIG Authorized Test Labs (ATL) program for PCIe testing and a process for PCI-SIG members to become an official test lab. The addition of Authorized Test Labs provides another vehicle for PCI-SIG members to obtain listing on the PCI-SIG Integrators List and the option to test their PCIe technology products outside of official Compliance Workshops. Granite River Labs (GRL) was approved as the first PCIe ATL to provide PCIe 4.0 Compliance Testing for PCI-SIG members. PCI-SIG members can find more information about applying to become an ATL by visiting the PCI-SIG ATL webpage or emailing compliance@pcisig.com.
- PCI-SIG held the first India PCI-SIG Developers Conference. The successful expansion of the PCI-SIG Developers Conference program shows the engagement globally of PCI-SIG’s 980+ member companies and those who work towards the development of the PCIe specification. The international DevCon tour will continue into 2024, starting with the Asia-Pacific Tour 2024 in February visiting Japan and Taiwan.
